We’re kicking off the next round of conversations with Matt Stouppe. Matt is a gaffer and co-founder and CEO of Bolt Lighting in the Bay. Along with the usual, “how’d you get into this stuff” questions, we talk about a very important topic—security on sets. Matt shares some of his experiences around security as well as some insights into ways that we can all work to make productions and crews safer while out in the world making movies.

Productions tend to move very quickly, which makes it all the more critical to take a moment to assess whether your production needs security to make sure everyone feels safe and can focus on there work. It can’t be an afterthought, and in some situations, it’s not an option, so be good to your crews and be safe!

Director Spencer McCall joins us to talk about documentary, narrative fiction, and everything in between. We first met Spencer after he created a film about The Jejune Institute, an alternative reality game in San Francisco. Since then, he continues to work on so many projects that blur the lines between truth and fiction, or use controversy to create meaningful messages; we talk a bit about the responsibility to the filmmaker and the audience when creating this kind of work. This month we are visited by Adrian Elliot. Adrian is a director and longtime friend who we’ve had the pleasure of working with on many occasions. He shares his story of how he found his way into filmmaking, and we talk a lot about the responsibility of the filmmaker to tell stories that are full of truth—and that doesn’t just apply to documentary work. No spoilers here, but we’ll just say two words: Heavy Metal.

Kiva Knight, gaffer and owner of Steelhip, is seriously one of our favorite guys out there. AJ and Roman sat down with Kiva about a month ago and he talked to them about his own idiosyncrasies dealing with light in his everyday life, described the roundabout way he got into this business and why he thinks people hire him (it’s the same reason some people don’t!).

French Press called up director Joey Izzo in L.A. to find out what makes him run. In turn, Joey opens up and lets us know that it’s ok to be fearful—just go make your damn movie! Have a listen!
